Dr. James L. Welch

Dr. Welch completed his undergraduate education at the University of Florida, graduating in 1978 with high honors in Biomedical Sciences. He was selected for the Junior Honors Medical Program at the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed medical school in 1982. He performed a one year internship at East Carolina University Medical Center, then returned to Gainesville where he completed two years of General Surgery residency and a three year residency in urology. He then went on to complete advance post graduate training with a one year fellowship in urologic oncology at UF Shands Hospital and Clinics. 

He is a member of the American Urological Association, Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, Florida Medical Association and Florida Urological Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and on staff at Orlando Regional Health System, Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women, Dr. Phillips Hospital, Same Day Surgery Center; he has served as chief of the Urologic Oncology Consultant Staff at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Welch was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1991. He has served as President of the Orlando Metro Chapter of the American Cancer Society. He has served as coordinator of the ACS "Man to Man" prostate cancer support group.

Dr. Welch has published articles in various medical journals, including the Journal of Urology. He has given multiple educational presentations to various community organizations. He continues to serve as a speaker for continuing medical education programs for physicians and other health care providers.

Dr. Welch provides the full spectrum of urologic care with a special emphasis on urologic cancer treatment, including the newer laparoscopic minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotic prostatectomy procedures. He also has expertise in female urology and the treatment of male and female urinary incontinence.

Dr. Stan K. Sujka

Stan K. Sujka, MD is a graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine. He completed his Surgery/Urology training at Millard Fillmore Hospital and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. Dr. Sujka finished a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York where he served as an American Cancer Society Fellow. He is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Sujka's clinical interests are focused on the accurate diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of prostate and kidney cancer. An experienced urologic surgeon, Dr. Sujka is committed to providing personalized, tailored treatments of urological cancers by balancing treatment with maintaining quality of life.

Dr. Sujka has extensive expertise in brachytherapy ("seeds") which he has been performing since the early 1990s. He is trained in HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound), the new, minimally invasive exciting technology that may revolutionize the treatment of prostate cancer.

With kidney cancer, Dr. Sujka favors kidney sparing procedure such as radio frequency ablation, cryosurgery and high-intensity focus ultrasound, procedures that get you back to living life as soon as possible. He also performs open kidney surgery as well as laparoscopic procedures.

Since Dr. Sujka has been in private practice for a long time, he has extensive experience with the treatment of female incontinence (outpatient minimally invasive trans-vaginal sling), male urinary leaking after prostate surgery and with office Thermo Therapy (TherMatrx), a drug-free for enlarged prostate relief. He was involved in clinical research with both Viagra and Cialis and has treated impotence patients with injections, MUSE, Vacuum pump, as well as penile implants.

Dr. Sujka is a Staff Physician at Orlando Regional Health System, Dr. Phillips Hospital, Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women, and is on courtesy staff at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida. He is in private practice and partner of the Orlando Urology Associates, PA. He is board certified by American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He belongs to the American Urological Association, the Southeasters Section of the American Urological Association and the Florida Urological Association.

Dr. Sujka has numerous publications to his credit that have appeared in J. Trauma, Journal of the American Medical Association, Urology, European Journal of Surgical Oncology and Journal of Urology. Dr. Sujka's non-academic writings have also appeared in the Florida Physician, Orlando Sentinel, Hospital Drive, an online magazine, and books such as Chicken Soup for the Teacher's Soul and Wisdom of the Ages.

On multiple occasions, he has been named "TOP DOC" in Urology by Orlando Magazine.

Dr. Marshall S. Melcer

Dr. Melcer received his undergraduate degree in genetics from the University of Illinois and his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his internship in surgery and his residency in urology at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Melcer completed his fellowship in urology/oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Urology Association, SESAUA and the Florida Urologic Association.

Dr. Melcer has done research in the following areas:

  • Immunotherapy in treatment of leukemia
  • Creation of anti-idiotypic antibodies in the treatment of leukemia
  • Transurethral incision of the prostate results
  • Role of laminin receptor in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder

Over the past several years, Dr. Melcer has made several presentations. He is a frequent lecturer to primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants on urological issues. He was awarded first prize for the Buffalo Urological Association Essay Contest in 1993.

Currently Dr. Melcer practices in all areas of urology, both benign and malignant, including Robotic Prostatectomy, minimally invasive therapy for BPH and complex stone disease.

Dr. Melcer prides himself on treating patients in the manner in which he would like to be treated himself.

Dr. Stephen S. Baker

Dr. Baker earned his undergraduate degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York and his medical degree from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine. He performed his urology residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia from 1997 to 2000.

Dr. Baker is one of Central Florida's premier Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons. He has a vast experience with Laparoscopic Nephrectomy, da Vinci Robotic Prostatectomy, and da Vinci Robotic partial Nephrectomy and Pyeloplasty. As an expert in Robotic urology, Dr. Baker has proctored many other urologists in these procedures.

Dr. Baker was the first physician to perform Laparoscopic Nephrectomy and Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty procedures in Central Florida. He has now performed over 2000 laparoscopic and robotic cases since coming to Orlando in 2000.

These new, minimally invasive approaches can be used to treat not only prostate cancer but other benign and malignant conditions of the kidney as well. The patient experiences quicker postoperative recovery while still maintaining excellent outcomes.

Dr. Baker is certified by the American Board of Urology. He is a member of the American Urologic Association, Florida Urological Society, AUA Southeastern Section and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Baker is on staff at Orlando Regional Healthcare System, including being a Urologic Oncology Consultant at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women, Sand Lake Hospital and Same Day Surgery Center in Orlando, Florida. He has given presentations at meetings of the American Urologic Association and remains active in his field.

Dr. Albert M. Ong

Dr. Ong received his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles where he was also a Howard Hughes Research Scholar. He completed his urology residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and served as an Assistant Chief of Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital following completion of his residency.

Dr. Ong is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and is a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the Texas Medical Association as well as the Florida Medical Association. His area of expertise consists of advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, including pelvic reconstructive surgery for severe pelvic prolapse, as well as partial nephrectomy for benign and malignant renal tumors. He currently practices in all areas of urology as well.

While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ong did research on advanced laparoscopic techniques and minimally invasive surgery and has had numerous publications which have appeared in the Journal of Urology, Urology, Journal of Endourology, and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. He has presented at the American Urological Association as well as the World Congress of Endourology. He was awarded second place in the national AUA/ACMI essay contest for basic science in 2003, as well as third place in the national AUA/ACMI essay contest in 2003 for clinical medicine.

Dr. David J. Vaughan, Jr.

Dr. David Vaughan was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois. He received his BA in Biology at Harvard University, and his MD at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Dr. Vaughan Completed his urology residency at Loyola University in Chicago.

Dr. Vaughan has been practicing urology in Central Florida since completing his residency in 1985. He previously was a senior partner with Winter Park Urology Associates for 28 years, where he served as President of that group. He has held numerous leadership positions in the Orlando Urology community, including Chairman of Urology at both Florida Hospital and Winter Park Hospital. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology at both the University of Florida and Florida State medical schools. Dr. Vaughan is Board Certified in Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He practices all aspects of adult urology.

Dr. Vaughan's outside interests include golf, skiing, exercising and travel with his family. He is pleased to be affiliated with Orlando Urology Associates since July of this year.
